Jaivakarshikolsavam 2018 at Rajendra Maidan Ernakulam (13th organic fair) April 10-13

ORGANIC Kerala charitable trust successfully organised 13th edition of its annual organic fair from April 10th to 13th, 2018 at Rajendra Maidan, Ernakulam, in partnership with leading educational institutions of Kochi, viz., Sacred Heart College, Thevara, Rajagiri College of Social Sciences and St. Teresa’s College, Ernakulam and Sponsorship from Organizations like Chittilappilly Foundation, Kanayanoor Agri and Rural SCB, Ernakulam Dist. Co-operative Bank, Medical Trust Hospital, BPCL, Cochin Shipyard, Malabar Cement, TCC, KMML, KEL, Traco Cables etc

The exhibition was formally inaugurated at 10 AM on 10th April 2018, by Smt. Soumini Jain, the Hon’ble Mayor of Kochi. Dr. M.P Sukumaran Nair, Chairman, Public Sector Restructuring and Audit Board, Government of Kerala being the Chairman of Jaivakarshikotsavam 2018, presided over the function. Justice (Retd) M.R.Hariharan Nair (Patron Organic Kerala Charitable Trust) Prof M.K.Prasad(Patron Organic Kerala Charitable Trust) Fr. Dr. J. Prasant Palakkappillil CMI (Chairman Organic Kerala Charitable Trust & Principal, Sacred Heart College Thevara) Sri M.M. Abbas (General Convener Jaivakarshikotsavam 2018 & Secretary Organic Kerala Charitable Trust) Dr. Claude Alwares (Director Goa Foundation) Sri K.J. Jacob (Chairman Kerala State Bamboo Corporation ) Dr. K.R.Viswambaran (Chairman Oushadhi) , M.E. Hassainar( President Kanayanoor Agri Rural Bank) and others spoke on the occasion.

On 11th April 2018 a National Seminar was organised at St. Teresa’s College auditorium on the theme “Organic Farming- Nature friendly- Healthy - Sustainable - Profitable”. About 150-200 participants including around 60 college students from various colleges participated. The renowned environmentalist Dr. Claude Alwares was the key speaker. Justice (Retd) K. Sukumaran enlightened the participants with his own insights on the subject. Sri Geo Jose explained in Malayalam what Dr. Claude Alwares spoke in English. Advocate Harish P Vasudev, Sri Sundara Raman from Sathyamangalam Tamilnadu and representative from Coconut Development Board were the other key speakers for the forenoon session.

In the afternoon session, the pioneering organic farmer Anthony Sami from Puliyamkudy Tamilnadu shared his valuable and successful experience in switching to Organic Farming. Young and Upcoming Organic farmers Swaroop K. Raveendran and MohammedTahseen shared their inspiration and vision on Organic farming for future. Sri T.S. Viswan (former Agricultural Officer Government of Kerala and proponent of Kanjikkuzhi model of Vegetable Production) explained the problems connected with Organic farming policies. Fr. Dr. Prasant summarised the session. Lunch and Snacks prepared using Organic food materials under the guidance and direction of Organic Kerala Charitable Trust was provided for all participants.

On 12th of April, an open forum consists of Organic farmers Traders of Organic products and Consumers was conducted which was dedicated for clarification of doubts and issues in the field of organic production, processing and marketing. This was presided over By Justice (Retd) K. Sukumaran. The session was enriched by the participation of veteran environment activists Eloor Purushan. It was ably guided by the Organic Kerala Charitable Trust’s resource persons, M.S. Nasser, Rajasekharan Nair and M.M. Abbas. About 50-60 people from various walks of life took part in the event.

On 13th of April at 11AM , farmers meet and Training was conducted .This was presided over By Justice (Retd) M.R.Hariharan Nair. Dr. Rajasekharan Senior Scientist from Kerala State Bio-Diversity Board inaugurated the events. The Training session on Crop Management, Plant Protection, and Role of Microbes in land fertility etc. was conducted by the Organic Kerala Charitable Trust’s resource persons, M.S. Nasser, Rajasekharan Nair and M.M. Abbas. About 100-120 farmers from across the State took part in the event.

At 5 PM on13th April, the Valedictory Session was inaugurated by Prof. K.V. Thomas M.P and former Union Minister. The session was presided over by Fr. Dr. J. Prasant CMI (Chairman, Organic Kerala Charitable Trust). Justice (Retd) M.R. Hariharan Nair, (Patron Organic Kerala Charitable Trust) Dr. M.P. Sukumaran Nair (Chairman Jaivakarshikotsavam 2018), Sri Kochouseppu Chittilappilly,( Founder Chittilappilly Foundation) Adv. M.R. Rajendran Nair(Activist on environment and Public Interest Litigation) and Sri Benny Joseph (Janapaksham) spoke on the occasion. Persons representing, our Partners, Sponsors, and other well wishers of the Trust was also present. The Organic Kerala Charitable Trust selected 12 Organic Farmers for Cash awards and mementos to honour their achievement in the field of Organic Farming. The awards were distributed by Sri Kochouseppu Chittilappilly among those 12 successful Organic Farmers selected by the Trust. There was rich participation of the public for the valedictory function.

The total expenditure involved, in organising, setting up of the venue, conduct of seminar, cultural programmes, and resource for various sessions and honouring of model farmers, was Rs 10 lakhs. From various stalls (fees) and sponsorship we could raise Rs. 6 lakhs up to 30.04.18. As things stand now, we are expecting that shortage can be bridged by collecting the promised sponsorship and balance stall rent.
